(AP) — A 57-year-old Northern California man died in the Smith River after swift water swamped his small boat and sent him into the chilly current. Del Norte County Sheriff's Cmdr. Bill Steven said a witness said the man's boat hit swift water and his anchor apparently caught on something which caused the boat to dip close to the waterline.

Two pedestrians were killed Tuesday in two separate and unrelated collisions in Del Norte County, including one hit-and-run that ended with the driver’s arrest. California Highway Patrol officers arrested a 51-year-old Piercy woman in connection with a hit-and-run south of Crescent City at about 9:50 p.m. Tuesday that left the pedestrian dead.

The California Highway Patrol and Del Norte Sheriff’s Office made multiple arrests after recovering a stolen vehicle on Wednesday. A California Highway Patrol officer noticed a 1990 Buick LeSabre traveling north on Elk Valley Road near Iowa Street. The officer recognized the vehicle as stolen and turned around to try to pursue the vehicle but lost it, according to CHP officer Brian Clemann.
