Jails - Summary: Jails are locally operated corrrectional facilities that confine people before and after adjudication. Inmates that are sentenced to jail usually have sentences of one year or less. Jails also incarcerate people in a wide variety of other categories.
Jail populations:
Inmate population of the number of inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents for the period of 1995 to 2005 rose from 193 to 252.
The twelve month increase of 4.7% in the jail population from mid-2004 to mid-2005, was slightly less than the average increase of 3.9% reported since 1995.
Almost 9 out of every ten jail inmates are adult males. However, the number of adult females in jail is increasing faster than males.
